Every staff member at VAL contributes their own perspective, creativity, and lived experience to our work with adult learners. Our latest staff Q&A offers a glimpse into the person behind the role, including the interests they bring to the job and a few details that help us get to know them better!

Name: Mark

Role at VAL: Center Coordinator – Springfield, VT, and White River Junction, VT

What is your educational background? Bachelor’s from Florida State University – 1982

What is a unique hobby or interest you have? I used to paint, I stopped painting, and now I think about painting a lot!

Last book you read? Currently reading Agents of Innocents by David Ignatius

How do you enjoy spending your free time? When I’m not watching trash reality shows with my wife, Sarah Fox, I think a lot about painting. And music!

How long have you worked for VAL? I started Dec. 8, 2025

Finish this sentence –  I look forward to working with VAL because… when I attended the VAL Anniversary, a woman at my table asked my connection to VAL. I said, “I volunteer teaching English.” She said, “Oh, you change lives.” I never thought of it like that, so that is what excites me… making a difference.
