Earlier this month, students and staff from the Brattleboro Learning Center enjoyed a field trip to Springfield, MA where they enjoyed visiting different museums and cultural attractions. Math Instructor Kavya Ganesh Reisig recounts their adventures below, providing insights into their exploration of art and science:

A few days after the eclipse, on April 12, 2024, students and staff from Brattleboro took a field trip to the Springfield Museum in Springfield, MA. During the trip, our group was guided by knowledgeable museum guides who took us on a fascinating journey through the world of art and space.

We started with a tour of the Michele and Donald D’Amours Museum of Fine Arts, where we saw beautiful paintings and sculptures and learned about their significance. Then, we moved on to the Seymour Planetarium, where we learned about stars and the universe. One of the highlights of the trip was watching a documentary called “The Sun: Our Living Star,” which taught us a lot about our solar system’s star.

After that, we explored other parts of the museum, including exhibits on natural history and the world of Dr. Seuss. We saw dinosaur fossils and learned about different animals and their habitats and cool taxidermy. One student was particularly excited about the Dr. Seuss Museum, finding the playful and imaginative illustrations captivating. She even mentioned that she plans to bring her own children to the museum someday. Another student was drawn to the sculptures and fine art showcased in the museum. One student reflected on the animals in the African exhibit regarding those he knew from his home in Uganda.

Overall, it was an educational and entertaining trip that gave us a deeper understanding of art, science, and culture. Thanks to Hilltop Montessori School for donating a passenger van for the trip. Additionally, Thanks to our Regional Director, Matthew Bentley, for driving the van, and Jackie for joining us and providing support along the way. Their contributions made the trip possible and enjoyable.
