Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Over the Long Weekend

VAL will be closed on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We invite our community to take part in events happening across Vermont that honor Dr. King’s legacy of justice, service, and collective care. Below is a sampling of gatherings scheduled to take place throughout the long holiday weekend:

Sunday, January 18

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Ceremony
When: Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Contois Auditorium, Burlington City Hall
What: A community remembrance program featuring speakers, reflections, and recognition of local leaders. Hosted by the Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center.

Monday, January 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Community Brunch with Green Mountain Gospel Choir
When: Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Inside The View, Champlain College, Burlington, VT
What: Free community brunch honoring the legacy of Dr. King, featuring a performance by the Green Mountain Gospel Choir and time for fellowship and reflection

34th Annual MLK Convocation
When: Monday, events are scheduled throughout the day
Where: Saint Michael’s College, Colchester, VT
What: Full day of programming reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy with talks, music, exhibits, and dialogue about justice and community.

MLK Day Concert at Latchis Theatre
When: Monday at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Latchis Theatre, 50 Main Street, Brattleboro, VT
What: Music performance honoring Dr. King’s legacy through concert programming presented by Windham Philharmonic. Admission is by donation.

We encourage you to explore events in your area and use the holiday as an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s words, be moved by them, and participate in acts of community service. His vision reminds us that learning is a lifelong journey, one that grows through shared experiences, civic engagement, and a commitment to justice. When we keep learning, we keep moving his work forward!
